SAM.gov registration
SAM.gov is the federal government's System for Award Management. Registration is free and is required for most federal contracts, and many primes ask their suppliers to be registered too.
What it is
Registering in SAM.gov gives your business a Unique Entity ID (UEI) and, through the Defense Logistics Agency, a CAGE code that identifies your facility.
In the registration you list the NAICS codes that describe your work, which determine the size standards you are measured against, and you state whether you qualify as a small business for each one.
Who needs it
Any shop that wants to bid on federal contracts directly. Primes and higher-tier subcontractors often ask for your UEI and CAGE code as well, even when you are not contracting with the government.
First steps
- Gather your legal business name, physical address, and tax ID exactly as they appear in IRS records.
- Request a UEI on SAM.gov, then complete the full entity registration.
- Choose the NAICS codes that match the work you actually do, such as machining or tool and die.
- Review your size status for each NAICS code and complete the representations and certifications.
- Note your expiration date and renew before it lapses.
Common mistakes
- Paying a third-party site to register. Registration on SAM.gov itself is free.
- Business details that do not match IRS records, which can hold up the registration.
- Choosing NAICS codes that do not reflect your real capabilities.
- Letting the registration expire while a bid or award is pending.
