ITAR registration
The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) control defense articles and services. Manufacturers of defense articles generally must register with the U.S. Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), even if they do not export.
What it is
ITAR registration is a filing with DDTC that identifies your company as one engaged in manufacturing, exporting, or brokering defense articles or services. It is a registration, not an export license.
Whether a part is a defense article depends on the U.S. Munitions List. Your shop should confirm applicability for its own products with DDTC or a qualified adviser.
Who needs it
Shops that manufacture defense articles, including parts made to a prime's design, generally fall under the registration requirement. Shops whose work is not on the U.S. Munitions List may not need it. Confirm applicability for your products with DDTC.
First steps
- Ask your customers whether the parts you make are ITAR-controlled.
- Review the U.S. Munitions List categories that relate to your work.
- If registration applies, create an account in DDTC's online system and complete the registration statement.
- Put basic controls in place for who in your shop can access controlled technical data.
- Renew the registration before it expires.
Common mistakes
- Assuming registration is only for exporters.
- Sharing controlled drawings or technical data with people who are not authorized to receive it.
- Sending controlled technical data by ordinary email or upload sites.
- Letting the registration lapse while still making defense articles.
WolfSpotter does not handle ITAR-controlled technical data through this website. Do not submit drawings or technical data through our forms.
